New Energy Future For New Jersey

What's New

This spring, the Corzine administration is developing a 10-year energy master plan for the state. A draft plan is expected to be released in the next few months, with public hearings following shortly after.

In just a few short months, the fate of New Jersey’s energy future will be decided.

Environment New Jersey is calling on Gov. Corzine to require the master plan to:

  • Reduce the state's energy consumption by 10 percent through high-performance homes, businesses, and appliances.
  • Increase the amount of energy we get from nenewable sources to 25 percent by 2025.
  • Phase out New Jersey's outdated, inefficient power plants.
  • Reject power companies' ambitions to build new nuclear power plants.
  • Ensure that any power consumed in New Jersey meets increasingly strict global warming emissions standards.
  • Prohibit the construction of new coal plants that do not capture and store their global warming emissions.

How You Can Help

Tell Governor Corzine to take on the big energy companies
and pledge to put our state on a path toward a new energy future.

Background

From the Clean Cars Act to the Clean Energy Standard, New Jersey’s decision-makers have taken a stand against powerful special interests, big energy companies and the Bush Administration.  In many ways, our state has set the standard for changing the way we use and generate energy across the country.

This fall, the Corzine administration is developing a fifteen-year energy master plan for the state.

It is a critical time.

Putting profits over public health and the environment, energy companies are lobbying to turn back the clock.  They want to build more power plants, continue the long-term operation of existing plants like Oyster Creek, the oldest operating nuclear power plant in the country, and expand our reliance on dirty power from out-of-state.

New Jerseyans know we have alternatives.  We have already had major growth in solar and wind energy generation in our state.  New Jersey’s first coastal wind farm in Atlantic City is up and running, and with nearly 2,000 solar installations, we are one of the fastest growing solar energy markets in the nation.

Now is our chance to really take our state in a new direction.  We have the potential to make huge cuts to  our energy use in homes and businesses and we can dramatically increase generation of clean, renewable energy by building hundreds of wind turbines and putting solar panels on millions of roofs.

Our ability to maximize our clean energy and energy efficiency potential is in Governor Corzine’s hands.  Governor Corzine must to take on the big energy companies, and put New Jersey on a path toward a new energy future.
